The truth is, there are no magic formulas, no fail-proof tricks, no cunning ways of trapping Mr. or Miss Right. There are however some essential facts that you should always bear in mind along the way. Dating tips are just that -- tips, not one-size-fits-all guarantees. Different tacks will work for different people. It depends on the situation, who we are, where we are in our lives, etc. However, there are some threads of advice that are fairly universal and can benefit anyone who practices them:

1.Get prepared for dating. If you really want to succeed in the dating game, be ready to commit to dating. Half-heartedness won't work. In fact, it won’t even get you half-way. If you really want to date, put some effort into it. Do some research and think about what you want out of dating. Prepare yourself for the inevitable rejection we all face at some point in dating and commit not to give up.
2.Get your act together. Begin a regime of looking your best. Join a gym, read health magazines, get fit and start a diet. Get your hair cut or styled and begin a new regime of good grooming or beauty treatment. Though it will not find you a date in itself, you will feel a million times more confident about yourself, and others can sense that.
3.Go shopping and treat yourself to new clothes and even a whole new look. Get your image right, one that you can manage and live with, but one that flatters you. Don't try to be someone you’re not, but amplify and accentuate your positives. Throw out those tired jeans, old sweaters or cardigans and spruce yourself up. Your date will appreciate that you demonstrated some effort.
4.Think about what you want to gain from dating and what timeframes you expect. Do you see yourself married within 2 years? If you do, then approach dating accordingly. If you are more laid back and don't take dating too seriously then ask yourself some honest questions about why you are dating and what you hope to achieve. If it is purely sex then ask yourself if you are about to be honest with those you hope to date.
5.Surround yourself with people who will support your dating aims. By following the first four tips you will feel better and be more focused. Don’t sabotage this by sitting around with friends who are negative about love and relationships (often the married ones). Start attending social functions frequented by singles. Sitting alongside couples at dinner parties in suburbia is not necessarily where you need to be right now.
6.Choose those you have a good chance of dating. Be realistic. In other words, your dating is based on the whole package you present as well as just your personality. If you are looking for a glamour girl or boy and want to date someone trendy and gorgeous, great! Just know that others will expect you to be the same.
7.Join clubs, societies, sports events, drama groups -- anything that might help you meet like-minded potential partners. You will not meet people by staying indoors and playing video games – many have tried and failed at this approach.
8.Take time off from dating occasionally if it’s not going well or causing dating fatigue. Recharging your batteries and keeping confidence and optimism levels high is an absolute must. We all hit rough patches, but don’t let your search for love become a death march. Date in phases if necessary.
9.Enjoy dating for what it is, dating. It is meeting people and socializing and spending time in the company of stimulating individuals who may or may not play a bigger part in your life down the road. The fact is, most people have something interesting to offer. While you may not be out on the dating scene looking for new friends, you may well find one or two fabulous people along the way.
10.Never make yourself too available. People like mystery and enigma and the thrill of the chase when dating. As part of keeping up the mystery, do not sleep with your dates early on. The longer a person is made to chase and fall for you within reason, the more likely that love may blossom. (And yes, this goes for both men AND women!) If the chemistry peaks too early, your emotions may never have time to catch up and the relationship will eventually wither away.

Unfortunately, your circumstances aren’t normal and require a bit more information and investigating. Not that being attracted to Asian women is a bad thing – not at all – but that Asian dating sites have a series of issues all their own.

So there I was poking around my favorite free online dating site, PlentyofFish.com, when I stumble upon a little known component of the Plenty of Fish dating site. Buried in it’s advertising section is a page in which you get a demographic breakdown of members based on the interests listed in peoples dating profiles. Yea I know, if you’re a stats junkie like me this is a pretty sweet find.

Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me and I started plugging stuff in. For some reason the word “zombies” popped into my head and figured that was as good a place to start my search as any. This search brings up a whole statistical breakdown from gender, income ranges, education, marital status, height, body type and even drinking ability.

So lets see, people who are interested in zombies are mostly: males, making less than $25,000 a year, are big and tall/BBW, and drink more than 3 times a week. Awesome!

You might imagine how much fun you could have with this thing just plugging in random weird crap. For instance, did you know that people interested in necrophilia have a 300% divorce rate? Who would have thought that?!

Despite my juvenile usage of this neat Internet tool, I decided to put my mind to better use.

Recently I had an argument with a friend of mine which I declared that the overall population of vegetarian females was hotter than the overall population of omnivores. It was a heated debate and my friend being anti-vegetarian for some reason refused to believe my theory. In addition, I wrote a post a few weeks ago about how vegetarian dating should be one of the categories in which to filter potential dates by.

However, now I have a chance to somewhat prove my point. I did searches with the Plenty of Fish demographic tool for interests involving the words vegetarian and barbecue. I figured people don’t write “omnivore” or “carnivore” in their interests section so I had to go with a more round about word, thinking that a majority of people who like “barbecue” are big meat eaters.

I plugged all the data from my searches into a nifty spreadsheet, made some graphs and this is what I got:

So as I suspected, a large majority of vegetarians are female, which shouldn’t be much of surprise to anyone. Of course, men are all about the BBBQ’s. For those Simpsons fans out there, you know what the extra “B” stands for.

The education level is certainly interesting, showing more vegetarians with higher levels of education. I’m not sure if this means that smart people are deciding to take better care of their bodies or whether eating a vegetarian diet makes you smarter. Either way there seems to be some correlation there.

Of course this was the graph I was most interested in. You see, I’m a bit of a drinker myself and it’s important to me that I can drag my female dates out to my favorite watering holes with me. Even when I’m browsing chicks on the Plenty of Fish site, I tend to filter by drinking habits… is that wrong? Anyways, I’m a little disappointed to see that a large majority of the vegetarians on the site don’t drink at all. Is there such a thing as being too healthy? Although, I suppose you could always use your date as a designated driver…

Last but not least, the characteristic that I’m sure most guys filter in their online dating searches is body type. Come on now, don’t lie fellas, we know what’s up. According to this chart, if you like thin, then you’ll love dating vegetarian singles.

What do I mean by “banter?” Well to put it simply, it’s a kind of humorous, playful, seemingly spontaneous conversation in which both parties are in good spirits. It is also kind of like teasing in a sense, you know, like when you were a little kid on the playground and that girl or boy would punch you in the arm for no reason, it’s because he/she really had a crush.

I’d like to share one sample conversational email thread with a cute girl who had actually contacted me, asking a simple question about my dating profile, which is filled with interesting conversation bait as any good online dating profile should. The names and certain details have been changed to protect the innocent and not so innocent (I’ll let you decide who’s who:-). Also, I will be adding my own commentary afterward in the blue writing to explain what is going on in my diabolical mind.

Now right off the bat, I have a cute girl contacting me all because I put in a ton of effort into my dating profile. There’s all sorts of interesting stuff that I’ve written and re-written, one of which is about my running/marathon hobby that baits her into sending me the first email message. Also note that she calls me “unique” and “interesting” so you know that I’ve got her attention, which makes the whole process a heck of a lot easier.

Hi Jane,

The marathon went well and though I was sore afterward, the recover was shorter than usual. I do believe that minimalist shoes allow your feet to move more naturally and is beneficial to creating a more efficient foot strike. Ok, there are two parts to this and both are pretty important. Most guys royally screw up here by either saying something sexually offensive or spilling their guts with a boring ass life story, possibly professing their love for this girl that they haven’t even met.

First thing I did was to answer her question briefly but also in a way that shows I know a lot about my hobby, running, without being arrogant. Second thing I did was to make sure I ask her a question or two. This step is important because it allows her to easily continue the conversation and keeps things moving. Also, if you ask her a specific question about her profile, it shows that you actually read it and paid attention to something other than her boobs!

Amazing, but I suppose it shouldn’t be so surprising. In high school I was forced to be a runner, and sort of continued after but to a much lesser degree.

New York is known for many things – Times Square, The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Bronx Zoo, “Sex and the City” – but wine? In fact, New York’s Long Island hosts some of the best vineyards on the east coast.

If you’re looking for a getaway without all the bright lights and big city chaos, head north of Manhattan to Long Island wine country and taste some of the nation’s most unique wines.

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Long Island sound, Long Island’s wine country produces award-winning wines thanks to the region’s moderate climate. After a weekend in Montauk at the Montauk Yacht Club, I hopped in the car with my girlfriends and headed down Route 27 to taste some of what Long Island has to offer. A few rules of the road before you start pouring:

Designate a driver! Long Island wine country has plenty of organized tours to get you from one winery to the next so you don’t have to get behind the wheel. If you are driving, designate a driver and stick to the rules. On our trip, our driver chose one vineyard she wanted to try, and only sipped a taste from a recommended vintage.

You won’t get to all 46 wineries, so choose wisely. We picked our first choice, then asked for recommendations from the locals and vineyard owners once we arrived. Here’s what we discovered:

Our first stop was at Wolffer Estate along Route 27. The Wolffer Estate is known for its rose wine, and to our surprise, you don’t have to be in the south of France to enjoy a rose! The vintage was crisp and clean, with the right depth of a good rose. The bottle was $10.99, a great price for a decent rose. The bonus: A bottle of apple wine, which is a great alternative to Reisling’s or ports as a dessert wine.

Wolffer Estates

We made our way down Route 27 to Route 25, which takes you from one end of wine county to the other. Our first stop along Route 25 was Laurel Lake Vineyards, a gorgeous property that was both inviting to the eyes and palette. I opted for a small tasting of three wines, and was treated to a cheese test as well. I walked away with a deep Cabernet Franc, an earthy Chardonnay, and a tub of horseradish cheese, which goes amazing well with the Cabernet. Total: $31.50

Our next vineyard was Bedell Cellars, a recommendation from the Laurel Lake Vineyard. The design of Bedell was very modern and sleek, a stark contrast to the English countryside-motif of Laurel Lake. Bedell Cellars’ Musee 2007 was rated the best wine in New York from New York Magazine, and while it was good, I enjoyed the Taste Merlot a bit more. It was heavy on the palette, which is how I like my Merlot’s, and would pair well with steak, lamb or pastas. The fun part? The wine’s labels are exclusively designed by local artists. Total cost for the Merlot: $35.99

Bedell Cellars

The Raphael vineyard was our last stop, and worth every moment. It lives up to its Italian name, complete with flags of Italy on the outside and a grandiose entrance to the tasting room. The vineyard was promoting its white wines this year, so I tasted the Reisling, which was surprisingly dry and plentiful for what is normally a sweet wine. I highly recommend it for those who want a crisp white without the acidity of a Sauvignon Blanc. I walked out with a bottle of the vineyard’s Naturale White, a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Reisling. Total cost: $21.99

The app [iTunes link], which will remain free for the first two weeks following its launch, lets users draft profiles based on six categories of sexual likes, dislikes, positions, kinks and fetishes. Would-be sexual partners can then “boink” their phones together (using the same technology as the BUMP app, which lets users exchange contact information by bumping phones) to determine whether or not they would be good together in bed.

The best part about the app is that users’ preferences remain entirely private; it simply reveals whether or not they would make good sexual partners with cheeky messages like “Drop what you are doing and get to a hotel right now” or “Turn and run away.”

For those less concerned about user privacy, you can also post the number of “boinks” you’ve participated in to Facebook and Twitter, as well as read and share hookup stories with other users.

The app, the creators tell us, had to go through Apple’s strict approval process three times, mainly because of the descriptions and diagrams it contains of various sexual positions. “We had a bet going internally as to how many rounds it would take to get approved,” said Swartz, co-founder of MEDL Mobile. “We love the fact that Apple finally said yes. It shows they understand adults are using the iPhone in ways that are certainly mature, but don’t amount to pornography.”

While it’s a fun app, it has one of the worst user interfaces I have ever come across (see video below). In order to set your preferences and view your stats, you have to click on “Start Comparing” from the main menu and then pull up a second menu. If you want to get back to the main menu, you have to close the app and reopen it.

The hem of his signature scarlet cravat clung limply to his collar like a stream of stage blood. The purpling bruise around his neck reminded her of the night’s horrific events. She choked, overcome. I’m wrong. Little Temple Wilder is playing alone on the swing set. Even before we are spotted, we can hear her plaintive plea: “Daddy, you said you’d push me! Please? PRETTY PLEASE, WITH SUGAR AND WHIP CREAM AND SPRINKLES ON TOP?”

Harry, the sleeves of his crisp Oxford button-down shirt rolled up to his elbows, is mumbling authoritatively into his Bluetooth. Sunlight brings to life the glints of gold in his gently tousled hair. He places a fingertip to his lips in the hope of willing her into silence, but Temple isn’t buying it. Patience is rarely a virtue found in five-year-olds.

Spotting us, he gives me a look that promises the world if I can guarantee him a few minutes of her silence, not to mention that of their Airedale, Lucky, whose barking at Harvey. Harry is a novice when it comes to negotiating with a mommy who has been housebound with an antsy boy for almost a week. But knowing his plight and feeling his pain, I give Temple a push that sends her giggling skyward, and then I do the same for my son. Harry bows in gratitude.

A half hour later, Harry pulls off his Bluetooth for good to find Temple and my son playing nicely together on the climbing gym. Mickey has gotten over his wariness of girl cooties (imaginary), and Temple is reassured that Mickey’s cooties (real, but gone) won’t be invading her full head of sun-kissed sateen curls. All is right in the world.

Harry smiles his unabashed gratitude. “Sorry. East Coast,” he says, by way of explanation. “Had to catch those guys before they go home for the day.”

I nod understandingly, and then stick out my hand. “Lyssa Harper. We’ve met before.”

Vagueness clouds his eyes. “Sure, I remember. You’re the Stuckeys’ au pair, right?”

I don’t know whether to be flattered or miffed. True, both the au pair and I have long dark hair, although mine is somewhat curlier. Okay, make that frizzy. And yes, it strokes my ego to be compared to a mere woman-child some ten years younger (not to mention ten pounds lighter). It’s more likely that he’s suggesting that I don’t seem worthy enough to live in Paradise Heights—unless I’m in someone’s domestic employ.

Only in my wildest fantasies would I assume that this is his way of hitting on me. Still, the thought of being picked up on the playground by the neighborhood DILF (the “dad I’d like to—.” well, you get the picture) does give me a cheap thrill.

Then it hits me: What if he’s asking because he thinks he can buy my services, which would leave the Stuckeys high and dry? Ouch! And those twins of theirs are a handful . . .

Gee, I wonder how much he’s offering, anyway?

Turns out he’s not offering at all. He just doesn’t remember meeting Ted and me at the Crawleys’ Christmas party last year. Or sharing a picnic table with us this past summer at the Paradise Heights Annual July Fourth picnic. Or that we were the ones who found Lucky after he escaped under their fence in order to chase after the Corrigan’s tabby.

My God, as oblivious as this guy is, I’m surprised he remembers his way home.

Then again, maybe he doesn’t. That might be why DeeDee had an affair in the first place.

“Um . . .no. I’m just a mom here in the Heights.”

As my black-and-white image of the Wilders gradates to chiaroscuro in the harsh light of reality, Harry tries to make amends for forgetting how many times our paths have crossed by complimenting me on how well my son plays with Temple.

Now it’s my turn to blush. I’m not used to hearing compliments about Mickey from other parents, only pointed remarks about how much more “rambunctious” he is than their own perfect progeny. “Thanks,” I stammer, then add, “I think his patience comes from having a younger sister.”

“Oh yeah? My son isn’t half that great with Temple. Of course he’s somewhat older, a teenager.” He gives a conciliatory laugh. “You know how they are.”

“I know your son.” Surprised, he blinks, then leans away slightly. He seems wary of what I might say next, so I continue gently, “Jake, right? He’s a sweet boy, too. He and my son, Tanner, play together on the basketball team. Very few of Tanner’s friends let Mickey join in when they come over to shoot hoops. You know how they can be: snubbing kids who are younger, or not as well coordinated. But Jake doesn’t seen to mind.”

Harry nods uncertainly. “Well, I’m glad to hear he’s not so—so judgmental all the time.”

“I never thought of it that way. I just think some kids instinctively know what to do with younger children.” Upon hearing this, Harry frowns. Quickly I add, “I’m not saying that that’s a good thing or a bad thing. In fact, I think it shows that, some day, they’ll make pretty good parents.”

Harry stares off in stony silence. As we sit quietly, I wonder what I’ve said wrong.

On the other hand, what does it matter? It’s my guess that he will forget our conversation the minute we gather up the kids and say our awkward good-byes. And the next time we meet, be it in the carpool line, or at a school function, or a neighbor’s party, he’ll vaguely wonder what the Stuckeys’ au pair has done with the usually caterwauling twins.

Right then and there I make up my mind that that is not going to happen, that I’m going to make a big enough impression on him that my name will finally be emblazoned on his brain, or at the very least that I crack his typically icy demeanor just this once.

Suddenly I remember another thing we have in common: our daughters.

“So, you’ve decided to give Temple a day off from school? In fact, my daughter, Olivia, is in preschool with Temple. Every now and then I let her do that, too. Kindergarten can be so overwhelming for little kids, even with a year or two of preschool under their belts. It’s not like they’re missing calculus, or anything really important, right? And the trade-offs are some wonderful memories. To be honest, though, I hate when it’s called ‘quality time,’ don’t you? I mean, every second with your child is memorable. Even watching them while they sleep is precious–”

I’ve been blathering so much I hadn’t noticed that Harry is crying.

The tears roll down his face in two steady lines. He turns his head toward me so that the children don’t see this, but my look of shock must be just as dismaying to him because he ends up burying his face in his hands.

And sobs even harder.

Harry Wilder, captain of industry, neighborhood enigma, one half of Paradise Heights’ Perfect Couple, is now a puddle of mush.

And it’s all my doing.

Out of habit I still carry Handi Wipes. Although they aren’t ideal in situations like this, I can tell that Harry is appreciative for anything that will sop up this mess that is now his life.

When he’s able to face me again, he looks me in the eye. “My wife left me. She’s left us.”

At this point I could feign ignorance, but since we’re both striving for honesty here, I have no desire to muck things up with a polite albeit face-saving (for him) lie, a “Gee! Look how late it’s getting” exit line, and another year or two of polite neighborly oblivion. Instead, I nod and say, “Yeah, I heard. On Halloween. I’m—I’m so sorry about it.”

“You know about it? But I—I haven’t said anything to anyone, yet! And she’s—she’s long gone, so I know it didn’t come from her.” He shakes his head at the thought that his personal soap opera is being bandied about the local Starbucks. “Jesus! And I thought news moved fast on Wall Street.”

“Yeah, well, you’ll find out about the Height’s mommy grapevine soon enough. I mean, if you plan on sticking around—”

“I am, for sure. I’m not going anywhere.” The lines on Harry’s face once again realign into a steely implacability. “This is our home. My kids love it here. We’ll…we’ll work through it somehow.”

“Sure you will,” I murmur reassuringly. “There’s no place like the Heights for raising kids. That’s why we’re all here. Hey listen, really, I didn’t mean to scare you off. You know, about the way we mommies talk and all. It was just such a shock to everyone. The two of you always seemed so—so happy.”

“Yeah. Happy. I thought we were, too.” With this, his eyes get moist again. This time, though, he shrugs, then passes a broad palm over them. I assume that he’s decided that the Handi Wipes give off the wrong impression. “You were right when you said that every minute you spend with your kids is important. And I haven’t been around for most of it.”

Well, of course you weren’t, I want to say. You were out making a living! Bringing home the bacon, playing this millennium’s version of caveman . . .

And boy oh boy, your stucco palace has all the bells and whistles to prove it.

Too bad you found another Neanderthal in there, with your wife.

But I keep my mouth shut. Because you don’t hit a man when he’s down.

Instead, I let him rhapsodize about how things will be from now on, now that he is home to nurture, protect, and defend. He has already asked his partners at his firm to cut him some slack, he tells me stoically. He’ll go into the office just two days a week, and only during the hours that the kids are in school. His partners don’t like the idea, but hey, they need him too badly, so they’ll work around it. Besides he can still juggle things out of his home office, after he takes the kids to school, right? At thirteen, Jake is too old for a nanny—not that Harry would ever consider that in the first place, oh no, no way in hell! That’s all DeeDee needs to hear to make her case for full custody. He and the kids will muddle through together, everyone pitching in to help out. He’ll position it to them as a family adventure . . .

As for the grocery shopping, or getting Jake to basketball practice, or Temple to her ballet and gym and acting classes, or nursing them when they have fevers, or covering them when their school is out for staff development days—not to mention showing up for parent-teacher conferences—how bad can it be? All it takes is a little planning, some adept scheduling on his Blackberry. Heck, it’ll be a cakewalk compared to flying all over the country in order to take meetings and meals with CEOs and CFOs at the Palm in DC, or the River Cafe in New York, or the Grillroom in Chicago—

You poor, pathetic misinformed man.

DeeDee certainly fooled you in more ways than one.

I am so tempted to level with him about his new life, to blurt out the truth:

That suburbia is a jungle, filled with lots of vicious creatures.

Gain a few pounds, and the hyenas start giggling behind your back. Don’t volunteer for that field trip, and the silence of those usually sweet-as-lambs mommies who must pick up your slack will be deafening. Forget that it’s your turn to bring the after-game healthy snacks for the little league team, and you might as well not show up because the other mothers’ tongue-lashing will shred you into human tartar.

And you, Harry Wilder, are nothing but fresh meat. So please, please watch your back.

But what is his alternative? To wallow in fear of the platoon of Pilates-pumped Amazons who commandeer the streets of Paradise Heights in their Lexus LXs or their Benz GLKs, and pray that he doesn’t say or do something so DI (domestically incorrect) that his kids will be ostracized until they leave home for college?

Or, perhaps it would be better to seek out the other househusbands in the neighborhood.

I wince at this thought. There are just two of them: Calvin Bullworth, a software geek who is such a hermit that he’s rumored to be a cyberterrorist under house arrest. His wife, Bev Bullworth, is the Heights’ number one realtor. (Her motto: “No Bull, Just Better Service!”) Unfortunately, this means that she is always in other peoples’ houses with strangers, and rarely home with Cal and their two children: Sabrina, who at twelve and a half is already a study in disaffected Goth; and Duke, her ten-year-old brother, who, unfortunately, has the sallow demeanor and social skills of his father. The poor kid gets crammed into a lot of school lockers.

And then there is Pete Shriver, the Heights’ househusband extraordinaire: a trust fund baby—yes, he’s heir to the Shriver Tectonics fortune—he has immersed himself in all things Paradise Heights. As the coach in the Paradise Heights Middle School basketball team, he has led the Red Devils to three undefeated seasons straight. At the annual Heights July Fourth Blazin’ Barbecue Cook-Off, his melt-in-your-mouth brisket, prepared on a fifty-four-inch professional Lynx grill, brings home the blue ribbon every time. Under his tutelage, the Paradise Heights communal vegetable garden is not only shorn of errant weeds, but any members who don’t work their gardens prodigiously. And as the editor of the Boulevard Bugle, his editorial series on the aesthetic advantages of authentic antique gas lamps versus newer aluminum faux versions inspired the community drive that ante’d up the four thousand dollars needed to cover their additional cost . . .

Oh sure, Pete is a dynamo . . .

Although he’s rumored to be somewhat less energetic in the bedroom, which is perhaps why his wife, Masha—a Russian mail order bride—is the neighborhood slut. And to everyone’s dismay, their thirteen-year-old daughter, Nastassia, is rumored to be following in her footsteps.

I don’t have the heart to break the news to Harry about his new band of brothers. Not that he’d believe me anyway, even if I did set him straight. No, it’s best that I ease him into this new world order.

As we round up the dogs and the kids and say our goodbyes, I suggest that we make a play date for Olivia and Temple for the middle of next week. Harry, grateful, promptly says yeah sure, then flips through the agenda on his Blackberry and thumbs that in, along with my cell phone number.

He is now officially a househusband.

His next task: File for divorce.

“I’ll never understand why this all happened in the first place,” he murmurs with a shake of his head. “I thought I gave her the life she always wanted. I guess I was wrong.”

One year ago…

She’s sitting down the bar twirling a tiny straw around in high ball glass of what I presume is a gin and tonic. She’s got a tight body and is all prettied up with make-up, hair and a sexy outfit, a bit overkill if you ask me, well at least for being in a small dive bar on a Tuesday night. She’s definitely older than me, probably in her early forties, about ten to twelve more years than myself. She keeps making eyes at me; those extra long stares, some people might call it the “fuck me eyes,” but whatever it is I know there is definitely some attraction.

I flash her a few smiles and acknowledge her flirtation. At this, she rises from her bar stool and walks directly over and sits next to me. Her legs crossed in a way that exposes her upper thigh and her cleavage stretching tight against a thin black blouse. She immediately opens up to conversation, introducing herself and exclaiming how she never approaches guys at bars like this…yeaaa right! It’s at this moment that it dawns on me. She is on the prowl. Oh my god, it’s a cougar!!

I had often heard many great cougar dating stories from some of my more sexually active college friends, stories that seemed beyond the realm of possibility to me, but tonight it looked like the cougar was finally attacking my scrawny nerdy boyishly handsome self… alright maybe I’m embellishing a bit but hey, I look young!

By the way, for those that don’t know, a “cougar” is a slang term for an older woman who pursues and dates much younger men, with the age disparity usually having a gap of at least ten years or more.

The cougar dating scene has really only become in vogue recently, within the past decade, as previously this type of behavior was taboo or socially unacceptable for older women at the time. However, now cougar dating is almost catching on as a fad. It seems to evolved to the point where it’s a sign of power and individuality for those older women. Some of them are divorcees simply looking to have fun, not ready to settle down again. Some are high powered executives who are more dominant and looking for a boy toy. I can’t really say where the term cougar came from but it seems to fit well as a metaphor for this type of womanly behavior.

Ok, lets get back to my story…

Finally, after she buys me multiple rounds of drinks and we have a lengthy yet flirtatious conversation, we end up back at my place…yadda yadda yadda… I now have my own cougar. Well actually she has me.

The next couple months go great. Basically she calls me on random nights when she’s feeling energetic, it’s always on her terms, but the best part is she always buys when we go out, or brings me beer or wine when she comes over. It’s almost like have a sugarmama I suppose.

Whatever type of relationship we have, it’s certainly not a serious one and it can’t last. And as with most cougar dating stories this one ends up with an unemotional and mutual ending. I can’t say that it was one of the most meaningful relationship I’ve had, it wasn’t at all, but holy shit, the sex was fantastic!

Present day…

So that little gem of a story occurred well over a year ago now. I’m not really looking for anything like that now. I really want more of a committed relationship a little closer to my age range, which is why I am still scouring the online dating scene. The experience was certainly nice though for a little fling and I learned a lot in the bedroom as well, which really helped me out. So in that respect, for you single younger guys out there looking for a little more experience I actually recommend finding yourself, or at least being prey, to lovely older woman.

There are even niche online dating sites popping up these days devoted particularly to cougar dating to help make the process more efficient. Hell you could probably even find plenty of them on free dating sites like Plenty of Fish if you look hard enough.

Having fun naturally attracts people; its the premise of the book and movie, The Secret, and countless other dating advice posts. But what does having fun to attract someone really mean, and how do you do it?
Have you ever met someone and felt like things were too heavy, too fast? Or maybe someone told you after you’d been dating a little bit that things weren’t fun anymore, and they needed the relationship to become light and carefree again. Perhaps you feel like there’s a weight that’s keeping you from attracting someone amazing, or that same weight is holding you back from taking things to the next level with your partner. No matter why you’ve ended up here, the end result is still the same: an injection of levity and laughter is needed in your dating life.

Saying it is easy though; doing it might seem incredibly hard. How do you make things light and fun after you’ve focused so long on where you’re going, what you want, and where things are headed? How do you let go of what’s weighing you down and making you less attractive?

Instead of focusing on what brought you to this place, why you’ve been a dark cloud of late, or why other people aren’t seeing you as you want to be seen – focus instead on the here and now. What can you do right now to have fun? What would put a smile on your face at this exact moment? What could you do for yourself that would make you feel pampered, release some weight off your shoulders, or be more attractive? That, whatever it is, is what I want you to do. Some ideas to get you started:

Put on some music that you can’t help but move to, and dance to the entire song;

Fly a kite in the summer, jump in some puddles in the springtime, rake up some leaves and then kick them around in the fall, or start a snowball fight in the winter;

Invite some friends over for a potluck dinner, explaining after they come that its a hands-only meal;

Find a big hill and roll down it.

For those of you in a relationship, having fun and keeping things light means something a bit different though. Not only do you want to try to enjoy yourself more often (but solo), you’ll also want to share some of those fun activities with your partner. Brainstorm a bit on your own to think of things to do together, but make sure you follow these rules as well to ensure you’re on the right track:

DO plan out what you’re going to do together on a date. Leaving it till the last minute or being spontaneous is fun too, but you want to ensure that you both are having a good time – so plan out what you’re doing for the next little bit to get back on track.

DON’T talk about anything heavy or serious on your dates, including where things are going, or how you feel about one another. If the other person mentions any of these things, its fine to listen to what they have to say, but replies should be kept to the bare minimum, such as, “I love you too,” or, “I understand what you’re saying.”

DO avoid topics that can create drama or that will make one of you angry or cry.

DON’T forget why you are together. Maybe you like their spunkiness or how they look at you; whatever the good vibes are between you, focus on things that bring out those characteristics in each other.

But most importantly…

4) None of this matters. You see… The truth is the biggest factor in whether you attract women is your confidence and your “game”. Now I don’t like the term “game” as it has some manipulative connotations… But in general I mean your lifestyle and how you communicate with women. You can take a guy who’s a girl’s exact type physically but if he’s pushy, creepy and dumb (most guys today are)… he will repel her away.
